All About the Louis Ghost Chair

All About the Louis Ghost Chair

The Louis Ghost Chair is a modern classic. Designed by Philippe Starck in 2002, it plays off the classic form of a Louis XV fauteuil with an oval back, open arms and slender legs. Made from polycarbonate it is produced for the mass market, and its traditional form and modern material make this transparent chair blend into any space.

Designer

Philippe Starck may be known for the interior design of hotels, including the Mondrian in LA, the Clift in San Francisco and the Delano in Miami, his design career has, however, extended to restaurants, furniture, lighting, domestic appliances, toys, glassware and so much more.

He believes in "democratic design", where design should not be only available to the wealthy. In recent years he has also pushed designers to ensure their designs are useful, and has spoken out against the greed of corporations who create products that have no real purpose for the consumer other than to take money out of their pockets. After speaking out that "design is dead", today he focuses more on ecological designs than household products.  Nevertheless, the Ghost Chair continues to be a popular form for design enthusiasts.

Where to Buy the Real Deal:

Louis Ghost Chair by Kartell

Kartell

Kartell is the official producer of the Louis Ghost Chair, and they can be purchased here. The chairs produced by Kartell will have a makers mark on the underside. It will set you back at least $860.

Where to Buy the Steal:

The Ghost Chair in a Kitchen

The Everygirl

With the original at $860, this might not seem quite as democratic a design as Starck set out to create. However the ghost chair is a popular form, which means there are resellers out there as well as reproductions after the original design. If you decide to buy the chair from somewhere other than Kartell we suggest you confirm that it was originally produced by the official maker by looking for their maker's mark. This will help the chair retains its value should you decide to sell it.

If you want the look without the price tag, there are some steals out there on the internet. They may not be as well made, and won't hold their value, but you can get the look you want.
